There are SO many engagement photo locations in New York, but more locations don’t necessarily mean better photos. I would rather give us time to actually experience a place than rush you through five locations just so we can check them off a list.

When I’m helping you choose where to take your New York City engagement photos, I’m thinking about the whole experience. The architecture, light, crowds, and what you’re wearing. How much walking we’ll be doing. What else is nearby. And most importantly, how you want your photos to feel.

Maybe that’s romantic and timeless, or it’s playful and full of city energy. Maybe you want a little of both. New York gives us plenty of room to create something completely different depending on where we go.

These are three places I love for exactly that reason.

New York Public Library Engagement Photos for a Timeless NYC Feel

If you love old architecture, fashion, and photos that feel timeless with a little editorial edge, I LOVE the New York Public Library.

The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building has these beautiful columns, stone steps, arches, and historic details that already give us so much to work with. You can get dressed up here, and it makes sense: a beautiful dress, a suit, great shoes, something with movement. The architecture can handle it.

But editorial doesn’t have to mean stiff. We’ll walk and move. We’ll let the city happen around you. I’ll give you direction when you need it, but I’m also watching for everything that happens in between. Those are usually the moments I love most.

The laugh that happens after I give you a little direction, the way you naturally reach for each other when we start walking, or your fiancé fixing your hair when the wind catches it. That’s what keeps a beautiful location from becoming just another backdrop.

The New York Public Library also puts us right in the middle of the city, which means your session doesn’t have to begin and end on those steps. We can explore the surrounding streets and let the energy change as we go.

For me, that’s part of the magic of NYC engagement photos. We don’t have to create every moment. Sometimes New York creates it for us.

Central Park Engagement Photos That Still Feel Personal

Of course Central Park is on this list. It’s iconic for a reason. But having Central Park engagement photos doesn’t mean you need the exact same photographs everyone else has.

Central Park is huge, and different parts of it can give your session a completely different vibe. We can find tree-lined paths and quiet greenery, open spaces, beautiful architecture, or views where you can still feel the city around you.

Instead of trying to hit every famous spot, I like choosing an area that fits the two of you and giving ourselves space to explore. Maybe we walk until the camera starts feeling less important.

You start talking. Laughing. Holding hands without me asking. You forget for a minute that we’re even taking engagement photos. That’s the good stuff.

I always tell my clients that some of the best photographs happen in between the poses. I can absolutely guide you when you need me, but I never want your entire session to feel like you’re waiting for the next instruction. I want you to actually be together.

That’s exactly what happened during Ger and Lizel’s Central Park engagement session. We started with movement, let them settle into being together, and photographed everything that happened in between. The golden-hour light was beautiful, but it was the way they naturally interacted with each other that made the photos feel like them.

What is the best time for Central Park engagement photos?

The season and time of day can completely change the feeling of your Central Park engagement photos. I’ll help you choose a time based on the season, the light we want, and how busy the area tends to be. If having a little more space to ourselves is important to you, we can also plan around the times when the park tends to feel quieter.

Spring is fresh and romantic, with greenery and blossoms coming back. Summer is full and green, although we’ll want to think about the heat and crowds. Fall brings so much color and texture. Winter can feel quieter and moodier in a way I really love.

Crowds are something we’ll talk about when planning, too. Central Park can obviously get busy, especially around the most recognizable areas. But I’ve photographed people long enough to know that I don’t need an entire location to be empty to create a beautiful photograph.

Sometimes I’ll change where we’re standing, or we’ll wait for a moment. And sometimes I’ll use the people moving around you because that little bit of beautiful chaos is exactly what makes the photograph feel like New York.

West Village Engagement Photos for a Romantic NYC Feel

I’m obsessed with the West Village because it has so much character. Brownstones. Tree-lined streets. Little restaurants and cafés. Beautiful doorways. People walking their dogs. Streets where the light can completely change from one block to the next.

There isn’t one specific backdrop we need to get to. We get to explore. That’s exactly why I love it for engagement photos in NYC. We can start walking and see what catches my eye. Maybe we stop for coffee, or we turn a corner, and the light is perfect. Maybe you’re laughing while we cross the street and that ends up being one of our favorite photos from the entire session.

I don’t need every second planned ahead of time. In fact, I don’t want it to be. When we leave a little room for things to happen naturally, the photos start becoming less about posing and more about remembering what it felt like to spend an afternoon together in New York.

That gives us room to create variety without spending half of your session in traffic trying to get to another location.

For greenery, romance, and that unmistakable New York feeling, Central Park could be the perfect fit. What Should You Wear for NYC Engagement Photos?

Wear something that feels like you. I know that sounds simple, but I mean it. 

Your outfit can absolutely complement your location. The New York Public Library can be so good for something dressier and more editorial. The West Village gives us room to play with personal style. Central Park can work beautifully with something romantic and a little softer.

But I don’t want you choosing an outfit just because it’s what you think people are supposed to wear for engagement photos. If you’re constantly adjusting it or wondering whether you look like yourself, you’re going to feel that throughout the session.

Fashion is part of the fun. I LOVE when my couples bring their own style into their photos. Just make sure you can move in it. And if the shoes are gorgeous but absolutely not made for walking around New York, bring another pair for getting from place to place. We can have both. I promise.

How Do You Make Engagement Photos Feel Timeless?

For me, timeless doesn’t mean every photo needs to be perfectly posed. It definitely doesn’t mean your photos should look exactly like someone else’s. You can send me inspiration. I actually want to see what you’re drawn to because it helps me understand your style and what you love.

But I don’t want to copy it. I want us to create something together. Your relationship is different. The way you laugh together is different. The way you naturally reach for each other is different. Even New York will be different that day. The light, the people, the weather, the energy happening around us.

That’s what I loved so much about Ezer and Devin’s romantic fall engagement session. The soft golden light was beautiful, but what made the photos feel special was how comfortable and present they were with each other. Those quiet laughs, little touches, and in-between moments are what I want you to remember years from now.
